As part of a series of comments from C3 funding partners, Blue Haven Initiative explains its support for C3 and for field-building, while also pointing to opportunities for impact investors, particularly family offices, to support progress during times of uncertainty.
Why join C3?
At Blue Haven Initiative, we take field-building and partnership very seriously. It is in our DNA. So, we view C3 as an incredible opportunity to support those goals.
This is a way to help build and strengthen the field of impact investing, not just for those already active in it but also to make it attractive to new investors as well, making it easier for them to be catalytic. We were inspired by the work of the original C3 funders, and it was a no-brainer for us to join this new chapter of work.
Even though we have an active catalytic capital portfolio, we know that to have a real impact, we can’t do this work alone and that we have a role to mobilize additional capital for the incredible opportunities available in market. We knew then that if we wanted to put capital into this space, we needed to bring others along with us and make sure the field could accommodate them. It’s why we support organizations like C3 that promote the value of patient, impact-first capital.
What is the role of catalytic capital in this moment of increasing global uncertainty?
Recent months have made a good case for the importance of private capital to meet the needs of underrepresented people and places. Where government funding was going to early climate innovation or supporting emerging markets, huge capital gaps remain. Now, we need to identify what other sources of capital can come in to fill gaps, as public policies change.
Right now, we are seeing many people be truly intentional about this. Family offices like Blue Haven are increasingly willing to make sizeable commitments to field-building and to co-exist in catalytic deals. These families and funds can be catalysts for good and help make the case for the ways that private capital can have a significant impact.
