Backing First-Time SME Finance Vehicles in Emerging Markets

What does it take to make SME finance work across emerging markets, and in Africa in particular? In a guest article for Next Billion, researchers from Investisseurs & Partenaires (I&P) and Triple Jump discuss what they found in a review of 10 years of data related to SME investing, including the experience of the Dutch Good Growth Fund. They identify market constraints and also note how pioneering SME fund managers are developing solutions to overcome them.

The article is the second in a series discussing the data. The first, Mobilizing More Capital for African SME Funds: New Research Reveals Persistent Market Constraints — And a Growing Focus on Innovation, was published by Next Billion in June 2025. The full report from I&P is available here.
