Creative Manufacturing and Handmade

200 Million Artisans is launching the Kula Innovate Capital Activation Engine to build the market infrastructure needed to accelerate the flow of catalytic capital to craft-led enterprises in India.

The Project

200 Million Artisans is launching the Kula Innovate Capital Activation Engine to strengthen craft-led enterprises and build the tools that will attract catalytic capital to the sector. This combines direct support for high-potential enterprises with sector-specific underwriting frameworks, a Community of Practice, two global Capital Futures Labs, and an open-access Capital Activation Playbook.

The Engine builds on two editions of Kula Innovate, India’s first sector-specific innovation and capital platform for craft-led enterprises. Kula Innovate drew over 400 applicants and supported 38 enterprises, 60% of them women-led, reaching more than 50,000 livelihoods. It has also served as an early testing ground for catalytic instruments, including low-interest debt and bridge financing.

Value and Outcomes

India’s Creative Manufacturing and Handmade sector supports an estimated 200 million people, intersecting with other critical objectives such as climate resilience, gender inclusion, and stable rural livelihoods. Because so much of the social and environmental impact is embedded in global supply chains, craft-led production represents a significant and underleveraged opportunity for impact investors, particularly those focused on inclusive growth in the Global South.

But there are also barriers to growth. Craft-led social businesses and startups need tailored support to expand their operations and sales, and investors lack the deployment tools to back promising opportunities. This project addresses both. It offers funding for high-potential enterprises and an Enterprise Residency, alongside sector-specific investing frameworks and roadmaps, and opportunities for collaboration among catalytic and mainstream capital providers. It expects to activate up to $600,000 in catalytic capital in year one, with a three-year pathway to as much as $6 million deployed.
